I contacted Black Fern Healthcare as I was looking for a functional chair for a small patient, 21 years of age.
I had tried other seating options but these had not been suitable and I had recently become aware of this new Company.
The aim of the chair was to provide a seating option that could be utilised indoors and encourage engagement with family.
My patient had a progressing scoliosis curvature, therefore, the seating option also needed to offer suitable postural support.
After discussing our patient’s needs, Steven was confident his Company could offer a suitable chair that would be able to accommodate these needs, and we assessed with the Baffin NeoSit.
The Baffin NeoSit has a unique Second Spine Technology that can offer specific, yet adjustable, support at the spine.
My patient found the chair very comfortable.
Overall, I found the whole process with Black Fern Healthcare very simple and straightforward. Steven was very knowledgeable, responsive and helpful throughout.
The support and education provided to the family was excellent and the equipment that Black Fern Healthcare have been able to provide will make a great difference to the family.
They also delivered the chair in the same week as receiving the order.

Background:
We were asked to visit a Young Lady at her home address. The Prescribing Clinician was concerned about the lack of support the family chair was offering. The Young Lady would sit on the family chair with her knees and legs tucked up to her chest. She was soon to have a Spinal Jacket fitted. Mum and Dad were also present during the assessment.
Challenges:
Scoliosis, reluctant to sit with legs in good position, transferred independently. She is a tall 9 year old and likely to grow a lot more.
Solution:
We assessed with the CHUNC Hi-Lo chair. We were able to use the Hi-Lo function to lower the chair to facilitate transfers. The CHUNC chair has also a flip up footrest option to ensure an End User can transfer to the back of the chair. The Supportive Contoured back offered sufficient support to the chest without needing any additional lateral support. The back support option also had some ‘give’ to ensure the chair will also support the Young Lady when she is wearing her spinal jacket. The seat depth was set to ensure pelvic stability. The Young Lady relaxed into the chair with her feet down on the foot support.
Outcome:
The Young Lady and her Parents were very happy with the chair as was the Prescribing Clinician. The Young Lady was happy and smiling and the Parents took many photos. Due to the modularity of the chair, it will grow with her into adulthood. They were only going to use the chair at home so opted for the Indoor option. A Crash Tested option would allow for use at home, school and for travel but was not needed on this occasion.
Background:
We were initially asked to attend a Special School for a Seating Assessment. The Young Lady, who attended with her Parent, was 12 years old. During the initial ‘Meet n Greet’ we established that the Chair was for home. We also established that the Young Lady had a Standing Frame at home that she hadn’t used for over a year.
Challenges:
Scoliosis, Contractures behind both knees, good sitting position but she had not stood for over a year.
Solution:
The Baffin TRIO was able to fully support the Young Lady in seating and her Mum actually said that she hadn’t seen her daughter sit so well in a long time. A combination of the Second Spine Technology and side laterals were able to manage the scoliosis and offer specific support to the spine. We were able to offer variable flexion at the knees and the Young Lady also enjoyed using the table that comes with the chair. However, the progressive stand function of the device enabled the Young Lady to stand as much as she could tolerate for the first time in over a year – Mum, again, was thrilled!
Outcome:
Mum took lots of pictures and videos to take home to show Dad. The Prescribing Clinician was pleased with the versatility and functions this device offered.
